“Advertising is flamboyant, boisterous, obnoxious and riddled with riddles.”

More than thirty-years spent in the photographic field supplied the information contained in this book. A serious photography student from a tender age, I have been gathering inside secrets and techniques as a commercial darkroom technician, a photographer’s assistant and over twenty years as a practicing, commercial photographer. I am now revealing these hard-won tips because photography is a young person’s endeavor and age is taking its toll upon me.

This book is designed to help chart the path for those who embark on photographic quests as we head toward the threshold of photography’s third century. There have been numerous changes in photographic materials and methods over the course of my journey, but bedrock fundamentals will be exposed, and even as we rush headlong into the digital revolution, those foundations are what will carry us into the future.

At first glance, some of the perspectives in this book may not seem to fit accepted conventions or standards. In some cases, this has been done to keep the material interesting, in others, personal experience, observations and reflections have revealed novel insights. And practical applications, commercial practices and trade secrets vary from the standard nomenclature. Since truth can be abstruse, a careful reading is respectfully requested.

This book is sliced into these tantalizing areas: The first sections contain opinions and truths garnered from readings, experiments and study. Included are observations on modern culture, theories surrounding visible light and optics, and some practical suggestions. The Image Production sections are equipment and materials oriented, give insights into contemporary practices including digital imaging. The Photoshoot section will help keep shoots from going sour. The Experiments section contains original, informal inquiries that are grouped by similarities and chronology, and have been unpublished until now.

The Ultimate Guide to Crocodilians in Captivity

The world of crocodilians has fascinated man since his origin on the planet. In the past this fascination was frequently accompanied by fear and a generally destructive stance towards these ancient saurians. The general stance associated with crocodilians was see them and then shoot or spear them.  Many species, such as the American alligator and the saltwater crocodile, had their numbers radically depleted due to overhunting in pursuit of the crocodilian’s valuable and sturdy hide. Many species were literally on the brink of extinction. Several species still are critically endangered, but the news is not all bad for these mighty reptilian predators. Crocodilians have proven themselves to be extremely resilient animals. Legislation restricting the taking of wild crocodilians has reduced and, in  some cases, eliminated illegal hunting of these animals for their hides.

The skin trade has turned to farming and ranching as a way to acquire the valuable product the market desires. A more recent side benefit was also realized due to the natural draw these prehistoric creatures have as tourist attractions. In some cases this tourism has become more important to wild populations than ranching. The cumulative effect of these events has allowed some wild crocodilian populations to approach that of original levels as well as increasing public awareness to the vital role crocodilians play within their ecological niche.

There are few animals as intertwined with human culture as  crocodilians. In any area where humans and crocodilians exist, there is a readily apparent reverence for the creatures. Aside from being used by humans for their durable and attractive skin and for food, crocodilians have been worshipped as sacred animals with godlike mystique, used as tourist attractions, educational tools, medical study animals, and kept as pets. Recently crocodilians have shown a direct benefit to the well being of humans with the finding that their blood contains a material that is extremely antibiotic in nature. This “supercomponent” has been named crocodillin. When isolated, it kills antibiotic resistant bacteria and will doubtlessly be used to save many lives in the future. Likewise, for humans who will benefit from the study of the crocodilians’ extraordinary heart, blood and anti-cancer properties of their cartilage.
