Ned, I sat down last night to read your book and could not put it down until I finished it some two and a half hours later. I laughed out loud in parts, teared up in parts, and went into serious thought at times about subjects that are not normally on my radar…you are a very good writer. Usually when I read a book like this I have a craving desire to take a red pencil and edit... No need here. The writing was facile, to the point, and wonderfully sparse. No more words than needed. I am a believer in the old adage that “less is more,” but you also used the “right” words. I often found myself rereading something just to enjoy the phrasing, or the wonderful word selection… …What a great idea to include your friends’/reviewers’ comments in the book, —but even better was your response/comments to their comments. It was like reading dialogue between Willie and Joe. A rich experience indeed—especially your self-depreciating humor. I especially liked your response to someone who had wanted something more like Thomas Beckett. “I’m trying to make it fun, like what we talk about when we’re drinking a beer.” Willie and Joe never got all wordy when they talked about anything important and that was a good thing. One of them would introduce a subject, the other would take a layman’s shot at it, and we – the readers got to think about what was said - and what was not said. Much more fun than reading a preachy diatribe. I look forward to more from these two fine fellows. Regards, Robert C. Holt |
