This I Believe Because my life was spared in World War II, I felt it was important that I do something worthwhile with my life. Several of my good friends, including two members of our undefeated Penn State soccer teams, Bobby Ernst and Scotty McGrail, and my high school soccer captain Bill Reish, were killed. When I came back alive after having spent 33 months at sea aboard two U.S. Navy Fleet Oilers (tankers) and not a man killed or seriously injured on either ship while I was aboard, I knew there had to be a reason. My first 15 months were in the North Atlantic, in waters infested by German Submarines. The last 18 were in the Pacific, fueling the Carriers, Battleships, Cruisers and Destroyers of the Fast Carrier Force as we reclaimed Japanese territory, from Guam, Saipan and Tinian through the Philippines and Okinawa on our way to the mainland of Japan. After earning nine battle stars we were 200 miles from Tokyo on the day the Peace treaty was signed. Why was I spared? Has God ever told me? Has God ever spoken to me? Yes, many times, but not in just a few words. I knew that God had spoken to me for a reason and His message was that I had to live the rest of my life in such a way as to justify His faith in me. |
